COLONEL MATTHEW O. BERRY 
 Colonel Matthew O. Berry is Vice Commander of the Air Force Special Warfare Training Wing, Second Air Force, Air Education and Training Command, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.  The Special Warfare Training Wing provides initial and advanced skills training for Air Force ground combat forces, administering 16 different training courses and managing Air Force participation in seven joint schools. This training includes entry-level and apprentice courses for Special Tactics, Combat Rescue, Combat Control, Pararescue, Special Reconnaissance, and Tactical Air Control Party officer and enlisted specialties, as well as combat diving, basic airborne, military freefall, static-line jumpmaster, air traffic control, weather forecasting, and paramedic training.  The wing consists of two groups, seven squadrons, and twelve detachments across nine states.   

Colonel Berry entered the Air Force via ROTC at the University of Kansas.  After graduation, Colonel Berry attended Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base and Fort Rucker Alabama and MH-53M initial qualification at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico.  Colonel Berry’s first operational assignment was to the 20th Special Operations Squadron, from July 2002 through January 2008.  He served in multiple positions including the Chief of Tactics and Assistant Director of Operations as an MH-53M evaluator pilot and weapons officer.  While flying the MH-53,   Colonel Berry deployed as a pilot on the first wave for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in January 2003. Between 2003 and 2008, he deployed multiple times in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.  Colonel Berry graduated from the US Air Force’s Weapons School in 2006.  He was assigned to the 71st Special Operations Squadron in January 2008 where Colonel Berry transitioned to the CV-22B.  Between January 2008 and June 2012, Colonel Berry served as the CV-22B Student Flight Commander, 58 Operations Group, Chief of Group Tactics, and 58 Operations Group Chief of Group Standards and Evaluations. In June 2012, Colonel Berry attended the Army’s Command and General Staff College.  He returned to the 71st Special Operations Squadron as the Operations Officer in July 2013.

Colonel Berry was then privileged to serve as the Commander of the 71st Special Operations Squadron in June 2015. Following squadron command, Colonel Berry was assigned as the Deputy Commander for the 58 Operations Group where he deployed as the Deputy Commander of Combined Joint Special Operations Air Component Afghanistan in support of operations RESOLUTE SUPPORT and FREEDOMS SENTINAL.  Colonel Berry then participated in the Air Force fellow program for his senior development education in 2017, where he worked with the RAND Corporation under Project AIR FORCE. Colonel Berry then served as the Director of Strategy, Plans, and Policy for United Special Operations Command-Pacific where he directed the development of special operations plans throughout the Pacific theater of operations.  Colonel Berry is a command evaluator pilot and weapons officer with more than 1,800 flight hours and over 400 combat hours.
